Herstories: Romance in the 21st Century
I'll be the first to admit that I love using the computer. It's a great form of communication, but I'm afraid it has made the art of romance disappear. With the computer, it is so much easier to say what you want because you're hiding behind a monitor. That personal level of interaction between two people just isn't there.
A whole slew of Internet romances have arisen with the popularity of chat rooms and e-mails. Sure, it's a great way to meet people, but it allows us to be lazy. Whatever happened to the extra effort people put into doing something for someone? I find it extremely romantic when someone writes a poem by hand seals it with a kiss and sends it on its way through the mail…or hand delivers it himself. Sure email is quicker and may be more efficient…but isn't it so much better to receive a letter in the mail? You can feel the paper, knowing the person you love wrote it himself, and at the same time imagine what he was thinking while writing these words for you.
I fear that technology is hindering the next generation from human interaction and it's up to women to keep the flame passionately burning. Women need to band together and encourage each other to head out into the land of the living. We must ignore the tempting call of the chat rooms and instead, get out there. If not for us hopeless romantics, romance would literally be dead. So ladies, push away from that desk, put your best dress on and paint the town red, blue or even green, just don't do it using it a computer program!
Romance to me, is about the extra effort someone may put into the relationship, not simply because of its convenience, but because they wanted to. I'm not saying that the Internet is a bad thing. I just think it should be a last resort when it comes to romanticism. Absolutely nothing compares to a warm touch, a smile, anticipation of being together. It's that feeling, that makes it all worth while. There is no way a computer can give you that.
